Jewel Nouveau exposes collisions of beauty and death in nature through interpretations of decaying leaves and flowers. I print these images on paper and repurposed apparel. I align myself with the forgotten, the discarded, reviving plants in decay as lined curls twisting, distorted figures dancing. Form and function, clothing as protection and adornment merge through the collaboration of drawing, printmaking, collecting, and sewing.
  I confront my fear of mortality, address my concern for waste, and celebrate my grandmother’s memory and collections in the  combination of patterns I apply to second-hand garments. My aim is to bring a sense of closeness to inanimate objects the way my grandmother’s jewelry or keepsakes I inherited provide, and translate that onto clothes that will move and recirculate through others.
